In October, the leaves turn colorful, it gets wetter and colder, and the summer season for fruit and vegetables is slowly but surely coming to an end. But what grows regionally and fresh during the transition period? Utopia.de shows you which fruits should end up in your shopping basket now – and which ones you should steer clear of.
Seasonal and regional food protects the climate
Our shopping and eating habits influence how much we impact the environment and climate. At Utopia, we recommend regional and seasonal fruits and vegetables, preferably from organic farms. This saves on long transport routes and long, energy-intensive storage times and therefore usually has a better carbon footprint. In addition, organic farming protects soil and water.
You should therefore avoid the following foods, as they are not in season here (anymore) and have therefore been transported over long distances.
Season over: no regional blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries in October
Blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries have been sweetening our snacks since early summer. Unfortunately, this is now coming to an end in the fall, as local berries are generally no longer in season.
Fortunately, there is currently still a regional alternative: black elderberries. These are ripe from August onwards, but some can still be harvested in early October.
October is usually too late for cherries
Are cherries still available? Unfortunately, not – at least not from local growers, because the season only lasts from June to August and the fruit cannot be stored for long.
If you still find fresh cherries in the supermarket, you should pay close attention to their origin. As a rule, they do not come from Germany. It is better to buy frozen cherries or seasonal plums.
Peas? A summer vegetable!
Bright green peas not only taste good with mashed potatoes, but also as pea guacamole. The small green balls are available fresh from June to September. In October, it is difficult to find them fresh and locally sourced.
You’ll need a little patience for kale

Kale also tastes good in salads, but the season doesn’t start until October. While the season for many summer fruits and vegetables is now over in October, it hasn’t started yet for others. This is also the case for local kale. Kale season typically begins in early November and lasts until around the end of March. So you’ll have to be patient a little longer.

Which fruits and vegetables can you buy locally in October
But don’t worry, the seasonal fruit and vegetable buffet is still lavishly stocked in October, including these varieties:
- Cauliflower and broccoli taste great boiled or roasted.
- Chicory is now available again from Germany. This bitter salad also tastes great fried.
- Pumpkin is in peak season in October: in addition to Hokkaido, there are many other delicious pumpkin varieties from Germany.
- Better be quick: local peppers, tomatoes, and zucchini are still available. To enjoy summer vegetables for longer, it’s best to pickle or preserve them.

- Plums are still available from this year’s harvest and are usually inexpensive to buy.
- Carrots, potatoes, and onions are available throughout the year in Germany.
